Sgt. Roy Henry Pinckney

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for First Sgt. Roy Henry Pinckney will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation following. Burial with full military honors will be 1 p.m. in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.

Roy entered this world November 8, 1949, to the late Clifford Kenneth Pinckney and Selma Roberts in Little Rock, Ark. He graduated from Boys Republic High School, Class of 1968. In February 1969 Roy enlisted in the United States Army where he served with distinction until his retirement in October 1991.

Roy’s duty assignments spanned the globe and he loved sharing his experience with his family and friends. His military decorations included the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.

Roy was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved interacting with people and treasured the friends he made during and after his military service.

Prior to his illness and death, Roy worked as a cargo handler at the UPS air hub. As an employee of UPS, he received numerous awards for his attendance, excellent leadership skills and dedication.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alma Bounds Pinckney; daughter, Patricia Waslaske; sons, Cliff Pinckney and his wife, Carolyn, Cory Pinckney; a host of family and friends.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of Winyah Community Hospice Care, especially Laura Mize and Daphne Allen for their care and concern. In addition, special thanks go to Linda Byer and the staff of the South Carolina Oncology Associates. Roy was fortunate to have these special angels at his side during his illness.
